IUD Birth Control Q & A

What Is an IUD?

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a flexible, small device that is inserted into the uterus. It works by preventing sperm from reaching and fertilizing eggs. If used correctly, IUD birth control reduces the risk of pregnancy by more than 99 percent. IUDs do not, however, protect against sexually transmitted diseases (STD).

You can choose between a copper IUD (ParaGard) or a hormonal IUD that releases small amounts of progestin (Liletta, Mirena, or Skyla). The ParaGard is effective for 12 years, while the hormonal IUDs Liletta and Skyla are effective for three years. The Mirena IUD is effective for six years.

IUD birth control is inexpensive and is the longest lasting form of contraception. IUDs are less hassle than the pill, which you have to remember to take, and you can breastfeed while an IUD is in place. Copper IUDs do not affect your hormones. Women using hormonal IUDs may experience less menstrual cramping and/or lighter periods.

Are IUDs Safe?

IUDs are generally safe to use, but as with all medical devices, there are potential side effects. These may include:

  • Pain upon insertion of the device
  • Backache or cramping for a few days after insertion
  • Break-through bleeding
  • Irregular periods
  • Heavier periods
  • More painful menstrual cramps

In rare cases, the IUD may slip out of the uterus or push through the uterine wall. Infection can also develop in the area of insertion. Talk to your doctor if you develop any side effects of concern.
